xMore artists are weighing in on the Frankie Valli lip-syncing controversy, including the 90-year-old singer himself. The “Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons: The Last Encores” tour has drawn some concern, with viral videos showing the New Jersey legend hardly moving his lips as the music played in recent tour stops.
The singer offered some defense in an interview with The Washington Post.
“I haven’t had a problem, an audience problem, for my whole life,” Valli said. “And if I can’t make a note, I don’t sing it.”
Valli’s wife, Jackie, 62, also defended him and noted that the audience is paying for an entire experience.
“Frankie wants to give the audience, his fans that he loves so much, everything. He wants to give them a show that they love,” she said.
Some musicians aren’t sold on that notion. Graham Nash, 82, who still performs live to this day, was not complimentary of Valli’s live performances.
“Frankie Valli is not singing,” Nash said to the Post. “He’s just lip-syncing badly to a tape. As a musician, if you’re not singing, you shouldn’t be onstage.”
Heart’s Ann Wilson, 74, also provided her thoughts after viewing a live performance video of Valli provided by the Post.
“Oh, my God. His face is completely still. He looks like he’s not even there. I suppose he’s not,” Wilson said.
“I think that’s the moment when you have to decide whether to walk offstage or not. You really have to look at your morals and go, ‘Do I just want to go up there and phone it in, give a bulls— performance because I’m me, or do I take the high road?’”
“The Last Encores” tour is set to resume on Nov. 8 at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
